Like most poets, I have a few favorite styles for which I hold a particular predilection- outside of my own creation, the Morganverse. I love the challenge of an Elizabethan Sonnet written in alluring iambic pentameter and I often write poetry about nature or a landscape.
Most of all, though, I enjoy Haiku, which is a Japanese verse most often composed of three unrhymed lines containing five, seven, and five syllables. The subject of a haiku is an image and is meant to depict the essence of a specific moment in time. This moment can relate a scene to the reader, an emotion, or, in the very best haiku, both.
Haiku are fairly simple, though challenging if you aim to truly relate that scene or emotion. I find they are also a wonderful way to take stock of each day and season. A means of sharing the emotions of our lives as time slips through the glass. A way to capture time. A journal of haiku is also a beautiful keepsake for your loved one(s) or a treasure for yourself, like a thankfulness journal.
